How do you replace a broken window?
Replacing broken windows is one of the most common home improvement tasks. This task involves repairing any damage to your glass. The repair should take approximately 30 minutes. However, if you are not familiar with how to replace broken panes of glass, you may cause further damage to the home. This article provides some tips on replacing a broken window.
First step: Take the glass out of its frame
First, remove all screws that hold the glass in place. The lock located at the top middle of the bottom portion of the window frame must be undone. Next, pull the window up slightly so it's no longer attached to the sill plate (the metal bar below the floor). Next, remove any remaining screws using a pry instrument until they are loosen. After the panes are taken off, thoroughly clean them.
Step 2: Clean the new glasses
To remove dirt and grime from the glass' surface, use a paper towel or dry cloth. Use a spray bottle with water and alcohol to clean any debris that has gotten under the glass.
Third Step: Reinstall new glass
Attach the window panes to the frames. With the tip of a screwdriver, push down on the bottom edge of the outermost window pane. Gently push down on the lower edge of the outermost pane with the tip of a screwdriver. After moving to the next one, push it firmly against your previous one before you reattach it. Continue inserting the panes till the window is complete. Seal the area where the panes meet with silicone caulk gun.
Fourth step: Repair the damaged area
Inspect the area around the hole when installing new glass to see if any repairs are required. Two small pieces of wood should be placed along the edges of each hole if the crack is near the corner. These wooden blocks will provide strength for the window, as well as acting as spacers during the expansion or contraction of the weatherproofing.
The fifth step is to seal the area.
After replacing the glass, you can apply silicone caulking along the perimeter edges to the window frame. This will create an excellent seal between the glass & the surrounding wallboard. Silicone caulking can be purchased at hardware stores and online. Make sure you choose a color that is consistent with the wall's existing paint.
Let the caulking dry overnight. After the caulking has dried completely, do not disturb it. You can cause cracking in the caulking if it isn't left enough time.
