How do I replace a damaged window?

Replacing broken windows is one of the most common home improvement tasks. The task consists of repairing damage caused to the glass inside your house. The repair should take approximately 30 minutes. You could end up causing more damage to your house if you don't know the best way to replace a damaged pane. This article provides some tips on replacing a broken window.

First step: Remove the old glass from its frame

First, remove all screws that hold the glass in place. Next, remove the lock at the top of the lower section of your window frame. Next, raise the window so it isn't attached to the sillplate (the metal strip below the floor). Use a plier to loosen any remaining screws. After the panes are taken off, thoroughly clean them.

Second step: Clean your new glass

Use a dry towel or paper towel to clean the glass. Use a spray bottle with water and alcohol to clean any debris that has gotten under the glass.

Third Step: Reinstall new glass

Then, attach the window panes back into the frames. With the tip of a screwdriver, push down on the bottom edge of the outermost window pane. Gently push the pane into the opening of the frame. Then move to the next pane, pushing it firmly against the previous pane before reattaching it. Continue inserting panes until all windows are assembled. To seal the area where the panes meet, use a silicone caulk gun.

Fourth Step: Repair the area damaged

When installing the new glass, inspect the area around the hole to determine whether any additional repairs are needed. Install two pieces of small wood on each side of any hole if the break was near the corner. These wooden blocks will add strength to the window while also acting as spacers to keep the glass in place during the expansion and contraction of the weatherproofing material.

Fifth step: Seal the repaired area

After the glass has had to be replaced, apply silicone caulking at the perimeter edges. This will create a strong seal between glass and surrounding wallboard. You can buy silicone caulking online or at hardware shops. It is important to match the color of the walls with silicone caulking.

Allow the caulking to cure overnight. You should not disturb the caulking after it has fully hardened. If you don't wait enough, the caulking could crack when you take it off.
