What's the difference between a handyman or a carpenter, you ask?

How to Replace a Broken Window?

Repairing broken windows is one the most common home improvement jobs. The task consists of repairing damage caused to the glass inside your house. Repairs should take about 30 minutes in this situation. But if you do not know how to replace a broken pane of glass, then you risk causing further damage to the house. This article provides some tips on replacing a broken window.

First, take the old glasses out of their frames

To remove the old glass, you must first lift out the screws holding the windowpane in place. Then undo the lock at the top center of the bottom section of the window frame. Next, lift the window upwards so it isn’t attached to sill plates (the metal bars below the floor). Use a pry to loosen any remaining screws. Once the panes are removed, clean them thoroughly.

Next step: Clean the glass

Use a dry cloth or paper towel to wipe away any dirt from the surface of the glass. To remove any dirt or other debris from the glass' surface, spray it with water and rub alcohol.

Third Step: Reinstall new glass

Attach the window panes to the frames. Use a screwdriver to push the outermost edge of your pane down. Gently push the pane back into the opening in the frame. After moving to the next one, push it firmly against your previous one before you reattach it. Continue inserting the panes until the entire window is assembled. Seal the area where the panes meet with silicone caulk gun.

Fourth step: Repair any damage.

If you are installing new glass, be sure to inspect the area where the break occurred. This will help determine if further repairs are necessary. Two small pieces of wood should be placed along the edges of each hole if the crack is near the corner. These wooden blocks will be strong and can also act as spacers, keeping the glass in its place during expansion and contract of the weatherproofing.

The fifth step is to seal the area.

After the glass is replaced, apply silicone caulking to all edges of your window frame. This will create a good seal between the glass and the surrounding wallboard. Silicone caulking can be purchased at hardware stores and online. It is important to match the color of the walls with silicone caulking.

Let the caulking dry overnight. Once the caulking is fully set, don't disturb it. If you don't wait long enough, you could cause the caulking to crack when you remove it.
