How To

How to Install a Receptacle Box

It is important to follow the recommendations of your local inspector when installing any type electric outlet. You should ensure that the wiring is done correctly, and that there are no fire hazards or water damage.

For installation, most boxes come prewired with four wires coming directly from the breaker panels. The box's two black wires are connected to the first screw. The red and white wires connect to the second screw. When connecting wires, it is important that you don't use wire nuts or wrap around screws. This will make it difficult to get the wires in place once they have been tightened. You want them to be free enough to move around but still tight enough not to pull from their holes.

A second piece of hardware might be required if you wish to add a receptacle or container to an existing box. To do this, remove the top of the metal box and place a new coverplate. Once the hole is made for the new receptacle and the cover plate is attached, you would need to connect all of the wires to the new receptacle.

You may not need a licensed electrician to replace the existing light switches in your home. To begin, you need to remove the old light switch from its mounting point. Next, you will need to take the time to unplug all wires that are connected to the switch. These wires include those that supply electricity to lights and power going into the switch. After you've disconnected everything, you're ready to begin the replacement process.

After removing the switch, measure the distance to the wall and mark the location with a permanent marking pen. Once you have measured the distance between wall studs and marked them with permanent markers, you can determine whether the new switch must be mounted high above the floor or below it. Depending upon the height of the switch, you'll need to drill a hole to mount the bracket or attach it directly to drywall using drywall anchors.

Once measurements have been taken, and the locations are marked up you can start the job. You will need to remove the drywall from the area where the switch will go. To avoid accidentally cutting the cable in the wall, leave 8 inches between each stud. Next, install the switch by attaching the brackets to it. Attach the cables to your switch and then secure it onto the mounting plates. Once you have installed the switch, turn the power back ON and test it to make sure it functions properly.
